In this interview Mrs. Alford discusses her father's (Frederick Martin Herold) employment at Kessler Brewery in Helena, Mont. as a "wet" cooper; her mother, Anna Wilhelmina Guettler Herold; acquiring the family homestead on the Little Buffalo Road in the Lump Gulch area about ten miles south of Helena; farming and blacksmith work; working in the Little Nell and Free Coinage mines off Lump Gulch Road; mining in the Lump Gulch area; Lump City; attending school at Travis Creek, Lump Gulch, Clancy, Missoula, and Helena; her first job; marriage to Fred Schimpf; his death and being a working single-parent; her marriage to Mr. Alford.
